TODAY IN HISTORY - JAN 13 - BIRTH OF THOMAS LORD
Thomas Lord was an English cricketer who played in the 17th and 18th century for Middlesex and Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). Lord is famous for being the founder of the spiritual home of cricket - Lords Cricket Ground. Lord’s earliest recorded game was on a ground that was owned by him in 1787. It is currently known as Lord's Old Ground. Lord was advised to find a more private venue by the Earl of Winchilsea and the Duke of Richmond. Lord's started the MCC near Dorset Square. Once the lease ended for the first ground, Lord relocated to North Bank in St. John's Wood, where he obtained two fields of which, one was referred to as Lord's Middle Ground. In 1814 Lord's took the turf to the present site in St. John's Wood. This is Lord's Third Ground, the Lords that we see today.
